WRITING 321
1. How did you decide what story (or stories) you wanted to tell in your audio bio? What was it like sharing this story, knowing that others would hear it? What challenges did you face in writing this narrative?
For my audio essay, I decided to talk about what made me who I am today. I chose things from my home and my childhood that helped me appreciate the little things in life. I enjoyed writing this because I'm glad others are allowed to hear about shaped me. While writing the narrative, I had some trouble picking music to go with the narrative. I wanted to find a tune that made my essay more realistic.
Describe your process of working on this audio bio. How did you approach it? What choices did you make in your writing process that were particularly effective? What do you wish you had done differently? Why?
For my approach to the essay, I wanted to write about where I am from as a whole. So instead of concentrating on the house I grew up in, I wanted to also talk some about the town where I grew up. It was difficult to make the narrative longer because I didn't want it to sound too dragged out. I thought the length of mine was appropriate because it allows for the listeners to visualize where I am from without directly saying it.
Assess your audio bio. In addition to telling us what worked well, tell us what you “failed” at in writing this piece? How did you make use of those failures? Consider the quality of your narrative, the structure, pacing, and details of the narrative, the sonic elements you include, etc. What have you learned through the process of working on your audio bio that you want to carry forward for your work on the refugee project?
In the writing piece, I think I failed at changing my tone of voice. I think if I was able to, I would maybe try experimenting a little bit more with tone. I tried to record different clips, and that seemed to help a bit with the tone of the audio. It might have also helped if I had not spoken so quickly. I had a hard time speaking slow and a slower pace probably would've been better. Through the process of the audio bio, I have learned that it is important to make pauses in between what I'm saying. So for the refugee project when we conduct the interview, we can make seperate recordings and the put them all together after.
